Reef Rescue

Reef Rescue is a key component of the Australian Governments more than $2 billion Caring for our Country initiative.

Through Reef Rescue $200 million is being invested over five years to address the impacts of declining water quality and ultimately improve the Great Barriers Reefs capacity to deal with climate change. This includes:

  • Providing grants to farmers, cane growers, Indigenous communities and landholders for improved land management;
  • Monitoring water quality and land condition monitoring; and
  • Investing in research and development.

Reef Rescue Water Quality Grants

The Reef Rescue Water Quality Grants are being administered in the Mackay Whitsunday region by Reef Catchments.

Land managers who adopt an approved land management project are eligible to receive up to 50% of the total cost of the project.

Round one of Reef Rescue (1 July 2008 - 30 June 2009) resulted in more than $4.93 million provided to 221 land managers to support 287 projects across cane, horticulture and grazing industries within the Mackay Whitsunday region.
